Florida Attorney General Broadens Investigation into Potassium Bromate Use

After previously issuing a civil subpoena to General Mills, Inc.

Florida AG expands potassium bromate investigation, issues subpoena to food distributor

After previously issuing a civil subpoena to General Mills, Inc. regarding the usage of potassium bromate in food items distributed in Florida, Attorney General James Uthmeier has now directed a civil subpoena to Performance Food Group, Inc. This company supplies food products to various businesses and restaurants nationwide.

The investigation centers on potassium bromate, a chemical additive associated with flour treatment and dough strengthening, which has been banned in multiple countries due to potential cancer risks. Uthmeier’s inquiry began in July 2026 under Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, focusing on whether General Mills included potassium bromate in products sold locally, including those supplied to grocery stores, schools, and restaurants. The latest subpoena requires Performance Food Group to provide a list of flour products containing bromate, records of who purchased them, and any disclosures made.
