A federal court sentenced Rigoberto Ramon Miranda Orozco, a 50-year-old Guatemalan man, to 30 years in prison on Tuesday for his involvement in a 2022 human smuggling operation that tragically led to the deaths of 53 migrants. Extradited to the United States, Miranda Orozco faced charges resulting from a sweltering journey in a malfunctioning tractor-trailer that took place in June 2022, during which many migrants succumbed to heat.
U.S. Attorney Justin Simmons remarked on the suffering endured by the victims, stating that many were found with signs of desperation as they attempted to escape the trailer’s confines. With nearly 20 individuals convicted since the grim discovery of the abandoned trailer, Simmons noted the collaborative efforts between U.S. and Guatemalan authorities in pursuing justice, while Miranda Orozco’s attorney argued for the need for comprehensive immigration reform rather than harsh penalties.
