On Tuesday evening, Congressman Maxwell Frost made an unexpected onstage appearance at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, where he participated in the opening performance of Buena Vista Social Club by playing percussion.
Frost joined the musicians at the beginning of Act Two. This experience is familiar for the congressman from Orlando, as he has a background in music. Prior to his political career, he served as a percussionist and bandleader for Seguro Que Sí, a notable salsa band from Osceola County School for the Arts, which once performed during President Barack Obama’s second presidential inaugural parade.
The performance also holds personal significance for Frost, whose mother emigrated from Cuba, the cultural homeland of the music celebrated by Buena Vista Social Club. The show, recognized with both Tony and Grammy Awards, is being staged in Orlando until October 25, with tickets and showtimes available on the Dr. Phillips Center’s website.
