A manatee named Southpaw is on the mend at SeaWorld Orlando after a severe injury led to the amputation of her right flipper. She was rescued in September by a couple in Titusville who noticed her struggling with a crab trap in the Indian River Lagoon and alerted state wildlife officials.
After being transported to SeaWorld by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, she underwent lifesaving treatment. Although veterinary surgeons were unable to save her flipper, the team successfully removed the harmful trap. Senior zoological specialist Mallorie McCormack confirmed, “They were able to remove that line.” Southpaw is currently receiving medical care and is being monitored, as she works towards a full recovery, with plans for her eventual release back into coastal waters awaiting approval from FWC.
