Exploring Marriage in the Provocative Play ‘To Hell With Marriage’ at Orlando Shakes

The exploration of the Hellenic afterlife has gained popularity, particularly with the recent release of Hadestown. However, ‘To Hell With Marriage,’ the new production by Playwrights’ Round Table, offers a different interpretation of ancient tales, posing thought-provoking scenarios like what if Hades were a tradwife TikTok influencer. The play premiered on October 16 at the Santos Dantin Studio Theater and runs until October 25.

Directors Bethany Dickens Assaf and playwright Irene L. Pynn, known for their strong female characters and innovative storytelling, collaborated for the first time on this project. Drawing inspiration from devised theater processes, they engaged local actors and community members throughout a year-long creative journey. The play follows newlyweds Orpheus and Eurydice amidst the backdrop of modern gender roles, offering a fresh lens on Greek mythology and marriage.
