Florida officials provided new insights on Wednesday regarding the criminal investigation of Kissimmee Mayor Jackie Espinosa, who is accused of leveraging her authority to manipulate a city grant program. The program allegedly awarded $50,000 to businesses linked to her family.
During a press conference, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier disclosed that Espinosa sought to alter the application process, reducing oversight to facilitate access to taxpayer-funded grants for herself and her family members. State investigators identified seven businesses connected to Espinosa’s family that received a total of $90,000 from the program, including $50,000 directed towards three family-associated businesses and $40,000 to tenants of their properties. Espinosa was arrested and charged with second-degree grand theft and first-degree organized scheme to defraud.
