SeaWorld Orlando reopens Mako after temporary closure following Six Flags death

SeaWorld Orlando has reopened its Mako roller coaster after a brief closure that occurred out of caution following a fatal accident at Six Flags Over Georgia. Mako resumed its regular operations on Tuesday, according to a statement from a SeaWorld spokesperson sent to FOX 35.

The ride had been closed since October 13, the day after a man fell from the Goliath coaster at Six Flags. Both Mako and Goliath were designed by the Swiss company Bolliger & Mabillard and share similar ride restraints. Mako, which debuted in 2016, reaches a height of 200 feet and can speed up to 70 mph. Other coasters produced by B&M at parks in Florida remained open following the incident.

On October 12, Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, tragically died after being ejected from the Goliath coaster and colliding with other riders. Following this event, Six Flags closed the coaster and the entire park, reopening it for the first time on Friday. Six Flags Over Georgia president Richard Pretlow assured that safety is their top priority and expressed appreciation for the community’s support during this challenging time. Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities look into the circumstances surrounding Kariem’s death.
